Whisky and Wildlife!

The Black Isle, the Moray Firth, Loch Ness and Whisky

Tour description

Your journey begins in the capital of the Highlands, Inverness, where your driver-guide will introduce to this thriving city. We’ll cross the Moray Firth to reach the scenic Black Isle, not black or an island but full of distinctive wildlife, keep an eye out for Red Kites which were reintroduced into the area about 25 years ago.

You'll travel through spectacular scenery to Fortrose, a lovely coastal town where you can visit a 13th Century ruined Cathedral. We will then head down towards Chanonry Point, one of the best places to see bottle-nose dolphins, if you do spot them you’ll usually be incredibly close as they feed and play in the channel.

Next, we’ll visit Cromarty, perched on the tip of the Black Isle. Here you'll feel like you've stepped into the past as you explore one of the best preserved historic towns of the Highlands. Its quaint fishermen's cottages, crow-stepped houses and grand sandstone mansions remain in great condition thanks to careful conservation work.

We’ll then continue our day on to Glen Ord Distillery* where you can see their distillers at work and learn how they create the perfect dram of whisky, and taste some too! For those who aren’t whisky fans your driver-guide will take you to Beauly. The village gets its name from French influence and means "beautiful place”. The name is very fitting and this village provides some lovely options for lunch along with a very pretty ruined priory you can visit.

After lunch, you’ll get the chance to see the world famous Loch Ness. It’s full of mystery, not only because of the legend that is the monster but also due to the extreme depth of the loch itself; it holds more water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined! We’ll stop at a little village called Drumnahdochit which lies at the head of Urquhart Bay here, and you’ll have the opportunity to discover more about the loch and its famous resident at the fascinating Loch Ness Centre & Exhibition*. As you follow the loch side back to Inverness remember to keep an eye out, you may spot Nessie, but you’ll definitely see the stunning Urquhart castle!

* Optional Extra. When the Distillery is closed there will be an extended stop in Beauly
